Select the Health Benefits-of-Red-Wine

One of the benefits-of-red-wine is that when used in moderation it can be healthy for the heart. The grape skins used to make red wine contain flavonoids and polyphenols. These powerful antioxidants keep blood platelets from getting too sticky and can dilate arteries. Additionally, alcohol may slightly raise HDL, the good cholesterol.

As a result of the difference in fermentation time, the health benefits-of-red-wine are far superior to those of white wine. It is thought that during the much longer fermentation time of red wine, more flavonoids are released into the wine.

The special flavonoids contained in red wine strongly inhibit the oxidation of LDL lipoproteins. Additionally, flavonoids such as catechin, epicatechin, and quercetin found in red wine bind excess iron and reduce inflammation. This is especially important as we get older because as we age we absorb and retain more iron in our tissues.

Resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant, is another of the health benefits-of-red-wine. It is found in grape skins and numerous studies have shown that it may prolong life and help to prevent cancer. Resveratrol in red wines offer protection to the heart and brain from oxidative damage and may reduce age-related diseases caused by inflammation. One study in Rome found that resveratrol actually stopped influenza cells from replicating.

We have all heard about the French paradox where the French have a much lower incidence of heart disease notwithstanding the fact that their diet includes many unhealthy foods. We eagerly accredited this to their reputed passion for wine. But their diet also includes a high intake of fruits and vegetables, which contain many healthy substances such as flavonoids and fiber. The fruits and vegetables in their diet probably have as much to do with their lower incidence of heart disease as the wine.

Research has demonstrated that resveratrol can enhance longevity and quality of life. One source of resveratrol is red wine but we would have to consume far more red wine than what is safe to get any benefit. The answer may be to use resveratrol and grape seed extract supplements. 

Remember to consult with your physician before starting any nutritional supplementation program. Nutritional supplements do not cure or prevent illness and disease.  They only give the body the extra nutrition it needs to take care of itself!  A healthy lifestyle starts with good nutrition.

It is thought that there is a close relationship between the level of tannin and the benefits-of-red-wine. Higher levels of tannin are found in drier red wines. Wines with the highest levels of heart-healthy compounds include Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Do the benefits-of-red-wine out weigh the risks

There is a downside to consuming alcoholic beverages. Excessive consumption raises blood pressure. And researchers believe that the power of alcohol to intoxicate is related to its ability to dissolve the fatty walls of brain cell membranes. The National Institutes of health research shows that alcohol decreases the concentration of DHA in brain cell membranes. This may be the reason why alcoholics suffer various degrees of dementia. DHA supplements are often prescribed as part of the treatment plan for alcoholics.

Knowing where to draw the line on consumption of any alcoholic beverage including wine is an important health tip. Dietary guidelines and experts agree that moderate drinking will provide the most benefits. The daily limit is one 5-ounce glass of wine per day for women and two 5-ounce glasses of wine for men. Wine consumption in these amounts can be beneficial to your heart and your brain and may help to prevent Alzheimer's disease.

If you don’t already drink alcohol, starting for health purposes may not be a good idea. Talk to your doctor before adding alcohol to your diet. If you already enjoy a glass of wine for dinner, don’t overdo it. The difference between moderate alcohol consumption and too much is a fine line. Three to four drinks per day may double mortality rates and increase the risk of congestive heart failure and certain cancers.
