Visit Nashville-Indiana, A weekend getaway and more

Nashville-Indiana is a charming weekend getaway that has something for almost everyone. For the retired person of some years it evokes feelings of Nostalgia for another time and another place. It does that for me. The many shops of Nashville-Indiana also provide a lot of entertainment for those of us who like to shop.

Nashville is convenient to I-65 and is a one-tank drive from Indianapolis, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Chicago. The village of Nashville is located just north of the Brown County State Park. The park nature center offers year-round activities for kids and adults. These include canoeing, horse-back riding, hiking, mountain biking and many other activities. Eighteen holes of golf can also be enjoyed at the nearby Salt Creek Golf Resort.

Bloomington and Indiana University are 19 miles west of Nashville-Indiana and Columbus Indiana is 19 miles to the east. The Monroe Lake State park offers great fishing and camping and is just 23 miles south-west of Nashville. If you like good fishing and primitive camping, try Yellowwood Lake just 9 miles from Nashville.

My wife and daughters appreciate the many shops in Nashville-Indiana and focus on shopping. The village of Nashville is a great place for shopping, with hundreds of unique craft, specialty and antique shops. You can watch artists in galleries and craft studios in the Village and throughout Brown County Indiana. In the shops of Little Nashville, visitors find original watercolor paintings, sculptures, stained glass art, solid wood furniture, wood carvings, metal sculptures, pewter, hand-blown glass, custom jewelry, hand woven clothing, and classic collectibles. Brown County is known as the "artist colony of the Midwest".

As for me, much to my wife’s consternation, I eat my way through the Village. One of our favorite places for both breakfast and lunch is the Artist Colony Inn. We also favor Hobnob corner for breakfast but then there are numerous good restaurants in the Village of Nashville. The Artist Colony Inn also schedules dinner theater shows throughout the year. The Nashville House is known for home cooking and would be a good choice for lunch or dinner.

Little Nashville's Palace Theater is a favorite, as is the Melchior Marionette Show and the “Hand-bell” Choir. The Palace Theatre features top notch professional entertainment and a wide variety of original shows. The Brown County Playhouse has been entertaining visitors for years. And the Bill Monroe Bluegrass Park offers nationally known stars during the season.

Brown County has a variety of good locally owned bed and breakfasts, hotels, and Campgrounds. The Artist Colony Inn has 23 rooms and a great restaurant downstairs. The Brown County Inn has 99 rooms. It is located on the southern border of the Village of Nashville. There are many other fine hotels in Nashville.

We have visited Nashville-Indiana many times and have not yet seen or experienced everything that it has to offer. We intend to keep trying and just when we think that we have seen everything they will probably come up with something new.
